The incident took place around 3 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, when officers from the Narcotics and Organized Crime Unit were investigating a reported delivery of fentanyl and other drugs to Stamford, said Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin.
After spotting the suspect's car on Seaton Road, the officers were moving in on the vehicle when the driver, Lawrence Lynwood Moore, 30, of Bridgeport, allegedly pulled out a gun and began firing at Officer Bryan Cooper, said Conklin.
"Officer Cooper was somehow able to find cover and avoid being struck by the gunfire," Conklin said.
After Moore ran out of bullets and laid down int he seat, officers were able to secure both Moore and his passenger, Matthew Sholomicky, without returning fire, police said.
Moore, a convicted felon, was charged with criminal attempt murder, criminal possession of a firearm, theft of a firearm, reckless endangerment, possession of narcotics, and possession of narcotics with intent to sell.
.He is being held on a $1.05 million bond.
Sholomicky was charged with possession of narcotics and possession of narcotics with intent to sell. He is being held on $50,000 bond.
Officers recovered 40 bags of fentanyl, several grams of crack cocaine, marijuana and the gun that was used by Moore to shoot at Cooper, which was stolen, Conklin said.
" We are extremely grateful that no one was injured during this incident," said Conklin. "We are extremely proud of the professionalism and poise while under fire displayed by the Stamford Police officers. They were able to remove more of the dangerous drug fentanyl from the streets of Stamford, recover a stolen handgun and take two dangerous people off the street and fortunately they were all able to go home safely to their families."
